Description

This impressive bubble marks the border between an intense particle wind originating in the star and the calmest part of the nebula's interior. The central star of the nebula is about 40 times more massive than the Sun and is responsible for the stellar wind that progresses at 2000 km per second, which projects particles from the star's surface. The surface of the bubble marks the limit of the advancement of the stellar wind that decelerates as it interacts with the denser material in the surrounding space.

The surface of the bubble is not uniform because as the bubble expands it will encounter regions of cold gas, which is at different densities and which slows down the expansion in a non-uniform way. In fact, it is this density gradient of the background material that places the central star outside the center of the bubble. There is much more material to the northeast of the nebula than the southeast, which is why the stellar wind progresses more slowly in that direction, causing the star to appear displaced from the geometric center of the bubble. At a distance of 7100 light years from Earth, the bubble nebula is located in the Cassiopeia Constellation and has a diameter of 6 light years.

To the right of the central star, there is a much denser gas barrier. The bottom of this barrier is the closest to the star and is therefore the brightest.
